Before comparing systems, it helps to know what you're actually weighing. Price per square foot is the number everyone focuses on, but it's rarely the number that matters most over the life of the roof.
Durability and lifespan matter more than upfront cost, since a cheaper material that needs replacing ten years sooner isn't actually cheaper. Energy performance matters too, reflective membranes can cut cooling costs meaningfully in warm climates, while that same reflectivity is close to irrelevant somewhere cold. And use case matters more than any of these in isolation. A restaurant with rooftop grease exposure has different requirements than a warehouse or an office building, and the wrong material in the wrong environment fails fast regardless of its general reputation.

It's also relatively fast and straightforward to install compared to multi-layer systems, which keeps labor costs down. The tradeoff is that TPO's chemical resistance isn't as strong as PVC's, so it's not the right call for buildings with grease or solvent exposure.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
PVC is the premium single-ply option, and it earns that position specifically through chemical resistance. Restaurants, food processing facilities, and industrial buildings with rooftop exhaust or chemical exposure hold up far better under PVC than under TPO or EPDM, which will degrade faster in that environment. Modified Bitumen
